Hands-on Activity: Mandala Art Practice
Instructions:
Safety Tip:
-Make sure children are always under your supervision while collecting the natural materials in the botanical garden.
-Children should wear sun hat while making Mandala outside especially during summer.
- Start a circle in an area which will allow art work to grow.
- Once you have determined your area, gather all the collected natural materials.
- Choose the central piece for your art work and sit this in the center of your working area.
- Choose another collection and form a ring around the central piece much like a tree ring. The main focus here is to make sure you make a complete ring around the first piece, therefore the inner piece is completely contained inside the outer circle.
- Continue this pattern adding new circles made out of different items until you believe your piece is complete. A minimum of 5 rings is usually required for visual impact.
- Take photo and share it with your family and friends.

Natural resources support children to observe and learn to look closely at materials and use all their senses to explore the world. An open-ended environment encourages children develop their curiosity, persistence and creativity which is important for developing children to become a confident and involved learner (DEEWR,2009). Mandala art activity also encourages children to engage in collaborative exploration learning process which is important for children's social development. In addition to that, personal and social capability is developed when children practice in "establishing and building positive relationships, making responsible decisions, working effectively in teams, handling challenging situations constructively and developing leadership skills"(ACARA,2013,pp. 21).
Furthermore, by looking at the sample of Mandala artworks, participants are inspired and learned to making and to responding to the world(Burke,2016). They use the natural resources to create different beautiful art forms and to analyse how the mandala art works when they working with others. It is a crucial art learning process to develop art knowledge, expertise and increase aesthetic expression. |
